WiFi triggers

A WiFi trigger fires when the listener's phone sees a WiFi access point with a specific name (SSID). It does not require connecting to the network — the phone just needs to be in range and have WiFi scanning permitted.

When to use WiFi triggers

  • The venue already has WiFi infrastructure with stable SSIDs.
  • You want a low-cost trigger and beacons aren't an option.
  • You need a fallback for iOS spots that would otherwise be MAC-only.

WiFi range is typically larger and more variable than beacons, so they're better for "you've entered the building" zones than for "you're at this exact display" spots. Use beacons or GPS when you need precision.

Adding a WiFi trigger

  1. Select the spot or zone.
  2. Open the Triggers section, click Add WiFi AP.
  3. Enter the SSID (the human-readable network name).

Caveats

  • WiFi scanning permission is required on both Android and iOS. The mobile app prompts the listener at startup.
  • WiFi scanning is rate-limited on modern Android (the OS throttles how often apps can scan). Sounds may take a few seconds to fire after entering range.
  • Don't use a personal hotspot SSID like "iPhone" — many phones broadcast this and it'll trigger on the listener's own phone.
